Principal’s Statement

In our school, teachers have always tried to keep in mind the following benefits for our students in these classes;

  • To build stronger bonds of friendship between citizens of Japan and the U.S., and to bring up bilingual, international citizens, better prepared to participate in our increasingly interconnected global community.
  • To experience personal enrichment by becoming familiar with the heritage and culture of the country of one’s origins, whether one is a recent immigrant or one whose family has been in the U.S. for many generations.  Another part of this is  to widen ones own knowledge of different cultures, whether or not they are part of ones own background, and so, through knowledge, be able to claim a part of many cultures for ones own.

Let’s study together and enjoy this unique experience with us.

History of the school

The Japanese Language School has a very proud history. It’s the oldest operating Japanese language school in the continental United States.  It began as the Kokugo Gakko in 1902. Japanese Community raised over $10.000 to build the new building in 1913. The school began as a pillar of the Japanese community.  It sought to preserve the heritage of the first Japanese immigrants. During its growth, the school has adapted its role in a multiethnic urban society and has opened its doors to students of all background.

The Seattle Japanese Language School is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and contributions are tax-deductible under IRS regulations.
